John Herber short biography
John Herber is the principal consultant for Process Hazard Management Services, LLC , a  firm specializing in hazard analysis, performance assessments, and management system improvement. John is also a Staff Consultant for the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS).

In 2009 John concluded a 33-year career with 3M Company that included positions in process and project engineering, production operations and corporate safety. In Corporate Safety Services, John developed programs for improving PSM systems across 3M’s global operations, including PSM metrics, Process Hazard Management policy and implementation guidance. In addition, he conducted PSM audits and assessments, and delivered PSM and PHA training.  John‘s diverse experience has shaped his personal passion for process safety while providing an operational understanding of chemical processes operations and equipment design.

John served as 3M Company’s representative to the CCPS Technical Steering Committee. In that role, he spoke at two CCPS International congresses, participated on writing committees for several CCPS Guidance books and presentlychairs the Process Safety Beacon and Process Safety Messages committees. He was named a CCPS Fellow in 2009.

John has a BS in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University.

He resides with his wife Melanie in Stillwater, Minnesota.  They have two  children and two grandchildren.

John is also a Staff Consultant for the Center for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS).

John served as 3M Company’s representative to the CCPS Technical Steering Committee from 2001-2009 . He, presently chairs the Process Safety Beacon and Process Safety Messages committees. John was named a CCPS Fellow in 2009 recognizing his contributions to process safety and willingness to share his process safety expertise .
John currently participates in several CCPS Project committees including Guideline for Auditing Process Safety Management Systems (2nd Ed.), Guidelines for Conduct of Operations, Guideline for Acquisitions Evaluation and Post-merger Integration, and Executive Process Safety Seminars.

John has spoken at two CCPS International Process Safety Congresses, participated on writing committees for the following CCPS Guidance books: Essential Practices for Managing Chemical Reactivity Hazards, Guidelines for Conducting Effective Pre-Start-up Safety Reviews, and Guidelines for Risk Based Process Safety.

In 2009 John concluded a 33-year career with 3M Company that included positions in process and project engineering, production operations and corporate safety. In Corporate Safety Services, John developed programs for improving PSM systems across 3M’s global operations, including PSM metrics, Process Hazard Management policy and implementation guidance. In addition, he conducted PSM audits and post acquisition assessments, and integration support. John also visited many of 3M’s International locations where he delivered Hazardous chemical process support, PSM and PHA training.
John‘s diverse experience including process engineering and production supervision, has shaped his personal passion for process safety and an operational understanding of chemical processes operations and equipment design. John’s service as a project engineer and engineering manager provide an understanding of both the technical and business aspects of process operations. His ability to organize and dollarize the cost & benefits allows him to create an effect business case for his projects.
